    On Saturday, May 6, we held our district soccer championships at Cesar Chavez High School. The Irene Lopez girls defeated Sunland and the Valley View boys held on against Lopez in penalties.

    Retirees honored in intimate ceremony

    On May 10, Roosevelt retirees gathered to be honored at the district office where they heard some parting words from superintendent Dr. Dani Portillo, had the chance to share stories about their time with the district and take a group photo with the executive team, friends and family. We are extremely grateful for all their years of dedication and service and we wish them the best on the next stage of their journey.

    FACE Coordinators, parents, students show appreciation

    Ahead of teacher appreciation week, parents and student council members from Irene Lopez, as well as our district FACE Coordinators stuffed appreciation bags for every teacher in the district. The bags were donated by the Valley of the Sun United Way and included a variety of items including girl scout cookies and Roosevelt Swag.

    Explore Program comes to RSD

    The Valley Leadership Explore program visited South Phoenix for the first time. Roosevelt superintendent Dr. Dani Portillo, an alum of the program, and other district leadership started the day with the current class at the Nina Mason Pulliam Rio Salado Audubon Center and Spaces of Opportunity to learn about Urban Farming before trips to the Girl Scout campus at South Mountain and Sagardo Gallery. The day wrapped up back at the Audubon Center where an expert panel talked about the changes happening in our community.

    School Participatory Budgeting celebration

    n partnership with the Center for the Future of Arizona and Arizona State University Participatory Governance Initiative, we wrapped up the School Participatory Budgeting pilot process with a Sponsor Evaluation Celebration on May 23. Throughout this year, 21 teachers and principals across nine campuses guided students through an innovative civic-learning process that empowered student voice to decide how to spend $2,000 on each of their campuses.

    Students learn soccer from the Rising

    Phoenix Rising FC and Roosevelt brought students to a soccer clinic presented by Equality Health at Maxine O. Bush school to Learn soccer tips and tricks from Phoenix Rising players Niall Dunn and Mohamed Treore! The free clinic was open to all RSD students.

    Hawks showcase learning in STEM fair

    Middle school students hosted the first annual Conchos STEM Fair on May 10. Students organized activities ranging from computer programming to flying drones. Mr. Sanjeev Tripathi received a grant through the Arizona STEM Acceleration Project, which provided professional development and $2,000 to spend of STEM materials.

    Mrs. Sheela Shukla was named the 2023 recipient of the John J. Ross Memorial Award for Excellence in Law-Related Education. Mrs. Shukla has taught all over the world and is currently in her 17th year as a teacher at Julian

    Tigers go underwater

    V.H Lassen students partnered with UArizona and Ameri Corps Volunteers build their own robot learning about science, physics and so much more. They got to try out their robot at the Kroc center and it went amazing. Students created the entire robot from start to finish and even built the controller!

    Eagles receive scholarships

    In partnership with the Greater Phoenix Leadership, Valley View has been able to see their Vision Statement come to life once again. Through this partnership, along with The Boys Hope Girls Hope organization, these students will be attending their sophomore year at Brophy and Xavier free of charge. To see them excited about their academics and life goals, is truly magical. Congratulations to eighth graders Taj Little, Sonny Barraza and Kenyon Reed!

    Staff, students participate in Mental Health Awareness Month

    May was Mental Health Awareness Month and our student wellness department engaged students and staff in activities sponsored by Project Aware. Staff members won calm kits or the book Atlas of the Heart for completing self-care bingo. Our eighth-grade students learned coping strategies to manage their own challenging thoughts, emotions, and behaviors through the online platform Everfi.
