    Background/History

     Ed and Verma Pastor

Ed and Verma Pastor Elementary School opened its doors in August of the year 2000 to the community of South Phoenix.  Better known as Ed Pastor, or simply Pastor Elementary, the school was named after Congressman Ed Pastor and his wife Verma Mendez Pastor.  Due to the efforts both Ed and Verma have put into education for the state of Arizona, it was only fitting that the people of South Phoenix honor them with an elementary school in their name.

Ed Pastor grew up in Claypool, Arizona and was the first in his family to graduate college.  As a teacher for North High School in Phoenix, a director of a non profit organization, and the first Mexican American Congressman to represent the state of Arizona, Ed Pastor is a man that should be, and definitely is, admired and viewed as a role model.

Verma Mendez Pastor is a retired educator who served as the Director of bilingual education for the Arizona Department of Education for 20 years. She has served as Chairwoman and served as a Board Member for many services including the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport board and the Friends of Phoenix Library board.

That being said its no surprise that the communities of South Phoenix have a school named to honor these two pillars of the state of Arizona.
